A Better Way To Learn

The best way to learn about your current world is to get away from it and experience something new. If you want to learn about business and culture, the most enriching experience is when you experience something which breaks the mold you know. We often think things work in a certain way until you see something different or better. Starbucks modeled the social coffee experience of Italy. AirBnB modeled the room for rent very popular through Germany and other western European countries. You need to see how people live and how business operates in a culture different than your own, in order to better understand why you do it "your way".

Are you worried about not speaking Italian? Rest Easy! English is common in tourist areas; but don't let that stop you. Getting around, shopping, clubs and restaurants all work just like they do here. International travel is so common throughout Western Europe that everyone is used to helping others when there is a language barrier.

For two weeks you will have a blend of classroom instruction and guided tours which will allow you to get a better learning experience than you can get on campus. Spend the morning talking about the business of Gelato and eat dinner overlooking the Arno river. Spend Friday talking about mergers and walk the ancient walls of Lucca or the beaches of Livorno on Saturday.

Why do some companies pursue low cost positions and others pursue high value add? How can both low cost and high value strategies be equally profitable? Why do internal conflicts between functional disciplines naturally exist in every company?
While sipping some of the best espresso of the world, you will earn 6 credits. Strategic Management is a core class and is required for all management majors. You have to take it; you might as well take it in style. You will get to talk about how companies set strategy and why.

More importantly, strategy is interesting. This is one of the most cost effective ways to knock-out six credits. For some, taking 6 credits studying abroad is cheaper than taking it on campus.
