A Typical Weekend

This is your time to head out to and explore.  Not only does Florence have enough history to keep you occupied, you have other famous cities within reach.  Even smaller cities offer a glimpse into the past such as the walled city of Lucca or the port city of Livorno.  These offer interesting excursions by rail.  Florence is also conveniently located on the high speed Eurorail line where you could spend the weekend in the Austrian Alps or the South of France. There is a group on-site which will help with arrangements if you would like a professional guide or simply need directions, want to know the most quiet beach or the cheapest way there.

My suggestion:  Team up with a guide for a short trip early in the process.  Have them show you how to use public transportation and ask questions.  This will take lots of stress out of future excursions.

  • The draft schedule for the Summer 2023 session can be found here:

  • Depart U.S. on Wednesday May 10tth  in order to arrive in Florence on Thursday May 11. You must check in with the on site staff by 17:00 (5pm) on May 11th. This means that you will need to purchase a ticket that lands in Florence no later than 15:00 on May 11th. The address for the study center is Piazza Santo Spirito, 10, 50125 Firenze FI, Italy

  • Departure day / end of the program is June 9th . You will need to check out of your housing on June 9th by 12:00.  There are no exceptions for departing earlier than June 9th.

  • We suggest arriving and departing from the main international airport in Florence, Florence Peretola (FLR) after changing flights in another airport. If you are not a seasoned traveler getting to Florence from other airports in Italy via train or bus can be stressful especially when you are jetlagged. It is much easier to land at the small Florence airport and hop in a taxi to get to check in point. See notes below on arrivals into Rome or other airports.

  • Our on-site  support staff is a study abroad organization, Accent Global Learning. They will be reaching out to those accepted in the upcoming weeks with information on documents that they need you to fill out. Please check your check your email frequently in case they reach out to you and it goes into your spam. You must fill out the documents that they request. They will also be sending you detailed information on how to get from the airport to the study center (the study center is most likely be where you will check in on arrival day) and what to do in case your flight is delayed or if you arrive after the check in time.

  • If you plan on traveling before the program starts you will need to make sure that you find your own accommodations as program housing will not begin until May 11th when you check in.

  • Please make sure you have a valid passport that doesn’t expire until 6 months after your return to the U.S. Anyone needing to renew or apply for a new one should do so ASAP and have it expedited. Photos can be taken in the main study abroad office for free (YONG 105).

  • If you are a non-US passport traveler who requires a Schengen visa please start your visa application process immediately.  It is up to you to verify entry requirements with the Consulate before traveling and to set up necessary appointments with the consulate.

  • Some may wish to fly in or out of Rome or other airport.  There are a few things to keep in mind specifically with Taxi and Rail.  In the US we have gotten so used to Uber and Lyft.   Uber and Lyft don’t operate there and you need to get used to looking for taxi stands as you don’t hail one on the street as it most US metros.  Two links of interest are : Tuscan Travel and  Visit Florence on ground transportation

  • From Rome (or other locations) you can catch rail into Florence   Rail is easy, cheap, and frequent.  Booking information and maps can be found here. Rail Italia

  • You may not know your exact address and who you are living with until you arrive.  Accent Global will try to honor roommate requests and they will be sending out a questionnaire well in advance of the trip.  Keep in mind, there are always last minute changes such as landlord issues, students dropping, pipes bursting, etc.
